How NOT to design

August 21, 2008

I just don’t get how people with fancy bachelor degrees and/or are employed at design firms are so terrible at design 1. It’s not hard to see something and know it’s pretty ugly. As blunt as it is, design has to be superficially constructed.

None of the metaphorical artsy B.S. ever helps it. I’m not even really much of a designer (I’m an animator and Illustrator). I know I do things that are not the most fantastic looking things, even with my own design. I certainly do not have any sort of fancy piece of paper (they call them degrees) that gives me the right to tell everyone what I think, but seriously; if I could teach myself enough to make it into galleries, it’s no excuse for people who do have the qualifications. I’m sorry if I come across jaded, but it needs to be said.

Facebook Creatures V2

Face book creatures

I designed a new batch of characters for Brad Dwyer’s Facebook application. Always a fun little challenge to roll out some fun stylised designs that will be spread around the web!

The Art of Bearskin

June 17, 2008

Finally done with the book. We are just ordering pages into something logical tommorow, but it’s turned out great! With the number of requests on flickr/email, I’ll probably compile an e-book, and get some prints of the book (or requested pages compiled) out to neat people who’d want them (yeah you too Lis).

If there’s any vector pieces by myself that you’d like to see as wallpapers or something else fun, don’t be afraid to ask! In the meantime, check out the flickr set.

4 Inspiring artists

June 4, 2008

jason

Jason Deamer:

Pixar Character designer. Really excellent array of forms that work incredibly well in animation.

teddy

Teddy Newton:

Excellent use of flat colour and shape. A very graphically functional design sense. Also works at Pixar animation studios.

baseman

Gary Baseman:

A fun painterly and unique style. Did the box art for the game Cranium, and art direction and design for Disney’s Teacher’s pet.

dlanham

David Lanham:

Sweet organic vector style. I love his work with contour, and the attention to tonality and detail. Does some pretty swell traditional work which is super rich with character.
