You’re a Ranga

Picking a reference

Reference in animation is an essential source to derive information from. Just observations of natural progressions in subtleties of body language can help to solidify the direction of a scene. I picked a scene from Summer Heights High, because I found the scene with Jonah to be quite humorous and an excellent source of character inspiration. Working with the live action footage for staging and of course speech delivery; I blocked out the story telling poses of the sequence to get a feel for the scene.

1st pass

After establishing all of the poses, we start to see how the computer wants to fill in the gaps. Obviously, in linear interpolation, everything moves at the same speed, and is lifeless, so positions inbetween the poses are also added, so give the machine more information to smooth with (we don’t ever want the software to do all the work, or it just looks dead!). When I run my 1st animation pass, I also like to block in the eye direction, and mouth opening and closing positions. A very generalised smooth is produced after this.
