Random

The word random is used to express lack of purpose, cause, order, or predictability in non-scientific parlance. A random process is a repeating process whose outcomes follow no describable deterministic pattern, but follow a probability distribution.

It’s the most annoying over used word I can think of. Andrew, John and I were discussing this amongst many other whiny things which do make a lot of sense if you are not an idiot. Ok it’s not the most annoying thing, but it gets referenced so much that it becomes annoying. More than anything, it’s when it becomes a bland substitute for other words. Teen girls and emos are the worst offenders of all:

“OMG! You are so cool and random!”

Is that saying she appreciates you but thinks she has a better ability to organise things? I’m pretty sure emos don’t clean, so I call B.S. I get called random a lot, so does this mean this collected bunch of thoughts called a blog is a fluke? I think it is a lazy word, and steals the limelight from regular but handy words like odd, quirky, idiot or nincompoop.

“That was random!”

The only thing ditsy teens have to add to a conversation when they have no idea what is going on.

Me: “Hey where are you?”

Some fool: “Oh I am with a group of randoms. You should meet them”

So if there is a group of randoms is that also a coincidence? Just randomly found some people that were way random and formed a group that is so random? Why does it happen so many times then? Seems like it’s a reoccurring thing rather than something random.

I think it’s perfectly acceptable when used correctly, or every so often in the ways listed, but not every single freaking time. Remove random from the vocabulary of teens girls and emo kids, and they won’t be able to hold a conversation for more than 5 minutes - fact.
