American Gangster

If film starts with a cop being doused with petrol and lit alive, you can probably tell it’s not going to be a happy film! American Gangster, directed by Ridley Scott has got to be the best Drama that I’ve seen in a good 6 months. Its golden globe association is thoroughly deserved. Instead of the usual good cop vs bad cop vs criminal story, it is centered around true events linked to the corruption of the law enforcement agencies in the 1960’s. When one man decides to outsource heroin production and sell it dirt-cheap, he soon becomes the wealthiest crime lord, sitting above the ranks of the Mafia. Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) has many high friends, who crave his success, thus buying into, and serving his drug sales business. Even the “good” cop in the film has his own demons to beat, buying his family’s trust with his good deeds, keeping tabs on his co-workers and partner in the precinct, and meddling with the already corrupt drug control departments. I probably could talk about how great all the gang fights and violence was, but it was such a neat film even without all that fun.
