I am Legend

I saw this twice - two days in a row. I really liked it, but it did have its corny bits and pieces. I am Legend, based on the graphic novel by Steve Niles (who also produced the 30 days of night novels) is very much like any other zombie movie, except this time the protagonist seeks to cure the infection. It is a very different adaptation to the original plot, which portrayed Robert Neville as a monster which Vampires and the living feared.

Pacing of the movie was a bit akward. It built up a bunch of suspense and excitement really nicely through to the middle, but then it just seemed to drop off. The relationship between him and his dog was established beautifully, and then they killed her :(. A bunch of awesome things didn’t get elaborated on - like how the heck the infected guys know how to set traps, and why they were starting to venture into the light - which was kinda bummy, because they could have made it really interesting. Oh, and the end seemed silly with the hand grenade thing. Why couldn’t he have thrown the grenade and then got into the vault? If it were any other actor as the lead, this movie would have sucked, but Will Smith really saved the movie and made it neat. He’s probably one of my most favourite serious actors now. OH odd fact : He turned down the role of Neo in the first Matrix movie.

Discussion:

  1. The magically appearing co-survivors was too much for me. Steve Niles? I would have attributed to Richard Matheson even though as you say the plot is far changed from the original.

  2. Actually it does explain why they can’t go out in the light… you just have to think and no some basic biology. They have no/reduced pigment in their skin.

  3. I only loved it and it was good, bye.

  4. @ Seuss: I noted him just because I felt that he brought the look to the film through his graphic novel style. But you are right that Richard Matheson was obviously one to accredit :)
@Stuart - Whoops, I was supposed to say they started to venture out into the light, which ties in with their mysterious ‘intelligence’ which they apparently developed after Neville noted it in his video logs.

  5. I thought the movie was great despite the fact that it strayed a tad far from the original. Will Smith had an interview which spoke of him playing a large role in producing the film this time around which allowed him to make the movie more personal and emotional. I think he did a great job.
